CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Atsuro Kihara
Character Canon: SMT Devil Survivor
History: Link. The info is a little scattered, but there isn't much of it and I don't have any extra knowledge that would allow for writing his history myself. The only thing that deserves a clarification is that Atsuro was bullied in (presumably) middle school, which was what actually led to his meeting with Keisuke.
AU History:
(To be honest I would've transcribed this a bit differently, but because of lack of cast members I'm altering his history to work with what I have.)
Both of Atsuro's parents were researches, who frequently left home to do their work. As a result, he grew up to be pretty independent and self-sufficient, and was aided by his neighbours (Mari and the Nikaido brothers). When he was 14, his parents left for another expedition and never came back (it's unknown whether they're dead or lost or something else happened to them); he was taken in by Mari and Kaido's brother after that. Around the same age, his abilities as an Enlightened started to manifest, leading him to decide to become a Trainer with a focus on field research, akin to his parents.
Over the course of the next two years, he left the school and began preparing to become a Trainer, bonding with his Togepi at the time. However, around the same time Kaido's brother was murdered - an event that caused a number of things in Atsuro's life to shift, but did not affect his goals in the long term, only delaying the start of his training. At the moment, he's living with Mari and Kaido, planning and gathering information for his journey as a Trainer, and looking after both Mari and Kaido to the best of his ability.
Canon Personality:
Atsuro has a pretty bright personality, positive, kind and talkative. He acts as the mood-maker of the group, even in the more grim situations, and is usually attentive to the people around him. Despite the hardships (bullying and his parents' implied abscense) he's gone through, he remains open to people and always tries his best to understand them.
Atsuro is also surprisingly resillient: he has enough courage and strength to keep himself together and take care of other people even in times of distress. He's protective of others and will try to bear the worst of the situation to make it easier for other people. He's willing to make personal sacrifices, especially when it comes to protecting those close to him - if pushed enough, he will even go as far as killing, despite how wrong it feels for him to hurt people. He holds himself to a high moral standard, often questioning whether his decisions or reactions or thoughts are the good and right ones. He can also be extremely loyal: if he believes in someone enough and trusts their decision-making, he will follow them through anything, pushing aside his own feelings, if needed.
On a brighter side: he's genuinely invested into coding and isn't too shy to show off (or sometimes brag about a little) his skills. Atsuro is naturally curious and good at analytical thinking, and is usually the one to piece together a lot of clues the team comes across. In addition, he is also good at finding his own solutions to problems, and will always try to come up with one if he's not satisfied with the options he's already given (or even if he is).
He's not without his faults, though, big and little ones (it's also worth bearing in mind he's still a teenager). He's vocal, often offering comments and speculations on a given situation, and sometimes goes overboard with it, unintentionally saying something that hurts other people. He is quick to admit and apologize for his mistakes, though, and does his best not to repeat them later. Another problem is that he can be too forgiving and accepting of people in his efforts to understand everyone: he's still yet to learn that just because someone's actions can be rationalized and explained it doesn't always make them right. Coupled with his tendency to self-sacrifice, this can be really dangerous, even if mostly only for himself and his mental health.
AU Deviation:
The differences are mostly subtle. BNW!Atsuro is close to the original, but a few of his personality balances are shifted around - he retains his kind nature, courage, curiosity and interest in technology, but is more secluded and less lively. The two biggest events that shaped him most were the loss of his parents and one of his guardians: the obvious result is that he's even more focused on helping and protecting people, and even more inclined to self-sacrifice and self-criticism (a part of him blames the unfortunate events on himself and believes that if he'd been a better person, perhaps, the gods would've handed him a better life. Like the one without dead people in it).
Akin to his canon situation, he spent a part of his school years isolated from his classmates - not actual bullying, but alienation nevertheless. He'd made a few good friends at school, though, and was really close to them and his family (and later, his adoptive family).
He's had a lot of doubts and conflicted feelings on being an Enlightened - it was part of the reason for his alienation in school (he never wanted to stand out as a human being, but it's kind of hard to fit in when you aren't exactly one, even if the difference is mostly positive), and Kaido's brother's death made him question further how much control an Enlightened has over themselves and if this is the kind of power humans should be granted or even are capable of handling. However, thanks to Mari's influence, he's decided to use his abilities to help people as much as he can, be it from his research or direct actions.
Because coding as such is not available, Atsuro takes an interest in a number of sciences: while technology is still his strongest point (including a limited and sometimes very specific knowledge of physics, mathematics and engineering), he also knows a thing or two about medicine (especially pertaining to field situations/conditions) and takes an interest in history - even though it's usually only related to the inventions of the world before. He is generally very research-minded and carries a lot of paper on him to make notes in almost every situation.
Atsuro is also surprisingly religious - something he is a little embarrassed about because his emotional involvement goes further than most people's (it's mostly because the teachings of the legend of the Hero resonate a lot with his own moral aspirations).
Canon Abilities:
In the game, almost no characters have any special abilities of their own and what they can gain only exists in the framework of COMP usage and contracting with demons, and since demon assignment is up to the player there aren't any set abilities for any character. Character stats are the only thing close enough to work for this section: Atsuro, surprisingly, has a focus on physical attacks and vitality. He's generally fairly balanced, though, so I suppose you could say his canon abilities are being average. Aside from that, he's also a good programmer, as I've mentioned before.
Enlightened Abilities:
Err, sorry if I mess something up here, I'm not 100% clear on Pokemon games mechanics, especially types mechanics.
Atsuro is a Normal/Electric double type, his special ability being Engineer.
Neither of his types actually provide him with a lot of moves; in both cases it's usually a combination of physical attacks and stats-boosting or lowering moves. His Normal type provides him with boosted defense and resilience (compared to normal human beings, anyway) and some physical strength, and Electric mostly provides him with speed (and also the ability to generate electricity).
First Evolution: this evolution mostly brings out his Electric type out more, granting him a bonus to speed and greatly increasing the power of his electricity. However, after this initial surge the buildup of his Electric qualities slows down, letting Normal catch up and eventually balance it out. After his first evolution Atsuro also starts focusing more on incapacitating his opponent if he fights alone, rather than actually defeating them.
Second Evolution: At this point he's mostly balanced out, and this evolution only enhances his already existing abilities, the only addition being is a boost of his Special defense/attack. He uses it to further develop his Electric abilities, but continues to focus on attacks that also cause paralysis.
In terms of Pokemon moves exactly his moveset becomes like this: his signature move becomes Thunder Wave, but the rest of the moveset is made up of average strength physical/Electric attacks (like Spark), Feint (callback to Pierce in the original game), Block, and a couple of double-edged attacks like Volt Charge.
Starter Pokémon:
A female Togepi, who remains nameless so far because she doesn't seem to like anything Atsuro tries to call her.
Notes/Special Considerations:
Nothing much here! The only thing I can think of is a possibility of Atsuro discovering (or creating) some new piece of technology but that will depend on the events and flow of the game, and I'll be sure to contact the mods beforehand, if it ever comes to that.

First-Person:
BNW testrun meme. The whole thread is kind of awkward because it was still mostly me trying to get a grasp of Atsuro's character in RP. I don't have full confidence in it so I'll be doing some questions answering too.
-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
Hmm... I want to know as much about them as I can! And understand them as much as I can. I hope one day we can live in harmony again. Heh, and my Togepi is important to me too! I, er, I mean, she's not mine-- I'm glad she seems to like to stick around me, though. Most of the time.
-What do you feel your role in Union is?
I'm a researcher! I... hope to actually be one someday, anyway. So my role is... to advance our civilisation, I guess? I know I might not make any significant discoveries myself, but perhaps someday after I die someone will find ideas or inspiration in my research... That's how science evolves. I just hope I can be of use to people with what I do, right now or sometime later.
Third-Person:
-What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Peace. And safety. I know it sounds idealistic, but... everybody deserves those, don't they? I mean, if you speak in broader terms, there's always prosperity and scientific progress and-- and bigger territories, more cities, a whole new civilization in the proper meaning of the word, humanity steering the world again. But I think sometimes you can go too far with generalizing. Anyone'd tell you they want those big goals for humanity, but I think what people want for themselves is just peace and being able to do what they want to do and be happy.
-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
... I would... do anything I can. Everything I can. And... And maybe, even some things I can't... U-Uhm, no. Everything I can.
-What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
I think every occupation is very important in its own way! For me, I’d say professors – passing on knowledge is crucial to the development of the society! Education is the sign of progress, after all. And then, there’re researchers – they give us new knowledge which is even more important! It’s dangerous though… But they’re they ones who help us move forward! Speaking of danger, though… if not for guards, there’d probably be a lot less people. Not many citizens can deal with wild Pokemon. Oh, and there’re rangers too! If not for their scouting, we’d be in much more trouble… Heh, I guess every profession IS important in its own way! Society functions as a complex mechanism, after all, there isn’t really a part that you can take away and still have it be the same because another part is more important. Historians give us something to be guided by – the good deeds of the world before the war and its mistakes as warnings, engineers strive to make our lives easier, Delvers provide them with the means to do so, Swords of the Savior keep the peace for those who can’t protect themselves, Medics and Caretakers—ah, now that I think of it, I guess Farmers are the most important? They provide us with food, and if there’s anything you can’t live without, it’s food.
-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
… It really means a lot to me. I think it’s a lesson in compassion and understanding. It teaches us that you have to do things not by power or threats but by working with others and realizing it when you make mistakes, and doing your best to correct them. I think all of that is very important to learn.
-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
Hmm… I know some things about finding your way using stars’ positions – that would only be useful if I at least approximately know where I am, though. And rather than making my way home exactly, I’d try to find the closest human settlement! It’s better than staying out in the wild. It depends on the wild too, though… Open places are dangerous, I would look for forests – they provide more protection from bad weather. Although I suppose I won’t need to worry about a storm so much… Still, I’d at least try to spend nights somewhere I can find cover. If I don’t have food I could probably fish in streams—there are some advantages to being Electric type. Of course there’s also the issue of carrying food and water with me… if I have any instruments on hand, I could probably craft something. If not I’d have to improvise… You know, this would be easier if I had more details on this hypothetical situation! Since it can be really different depending on where you are and what Pokemon live in that area and where is the closest human settlement.
-You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
Wisdom and technology! Treasure… Well, resources can be useful too, but what I’d want to look for is knowledge. Scientific progress is a slow process, so I think it’s important to do whatever we can to speed it up. Plus, we already have a lot of pieces of Old City’s technology… But it’s like a puzzle. We need to find more pieces to make a whole picture, and learn how to use it properly… I really hope there isn’t anything like weapons down there. We have enough danger as it is. Things that would make everyday lives easier would be nice… And something to help us understand Pokemon better, too. Maybe the history of the old world? There are bound to be records down there – libraries, museums, maybe things like newspapers for, er, more modern times? I wonder how long they would last, though… Conditions are probably different for different parts of the city, it would keep nicely in dry places—Ah, sorry, I’m rambling. Er. My original point still stands, though. I’d want wisdom and technology.
REAPP ADDITION:
After Atsuro was dropped, he went off to chase another lead on his missing parents. He kept in touch with Mari and Kaido via the warp band, still searching around Union, but after a couple of months the communication stopped, and Mari and Kaido set out on a search for Atsuro. Meanwhile he, during his travels, had met a person from Union who had seen people fitting the descriptions of Atsuro's parents but wasn't able to point him to them. Exhausted both physically and emotionally but hopeful once again, Atsuro decided to go back to Union to take a break and resume his search later.
